I’m an Old Hand at Love
Oil on linen, 2022
130cm W x 100cm H
This is an old London Routemaster, a much loved icon of London’s public transport system. The painting within is ‘Minnie Cunningham at the Old Bedford’ by Walter Sickert, painted in 1892. Minnie Cunningham was a popular performer at the Old Bedford Music Hall in Camden Town, where Sickert went regularly. He first exhibited it with the subtitle ‘I’m an old hand at love, though I’m young in years’, a quote from one of Cunningham’s songs. The painting is currently in the Tate Collection, and Tate’s first major retrospective on Sickert opens on 28 April 2022.
