The Man of Sorrows was a popular religious image from 14th century onwards. It presented Christ as a scapegoat, cast out into the wilderness to take away a community’s sins. It used graphic wounds and nakedness to heighten the emotional impact of the incarnation of the spirit made flesh, as well as the rejection of earthly things.
