Carrying Aubrey
Pencil on old book paper, 2021
28cm W x 22cm H
A self portrait carrying Aubrey Beardsley up the steps to Saint Michel de Menton. Afflicted as he was by tuberculosis, it would have been impossible for Aubrey to climb those steps, so in this allegory I carry him on my back while his sister Mabel Beardsley (an actor) observes us like a goddess from amidst blackbirds and flowers. In the background is the urn in the Menton cemetery where Aubrey is buried.
