Claude Lorraine’s ‘Flight into Egypt’, referenced in the background here, depicts when the Holy Family fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s persecution. Claude put them in a serene setting. In Renaissance art, the pyramidal composition was often used to give the impression of stability and depth whilst it also carries religious connotations – the trinity and ascension. I have echoed that in the insert with the arrangement of the seated artist.
