Scope Miami

29 November to 4 December 2011

Overview

We are pleased to present a solo project of new works by Koh Sang Woo at this year’s edition of Scope Art Fair in Miami.

Koh Sang Woo is widely recognized for his distinctive approach to both photography and performance. Working with carefully chosen subjects, he physically paints onto their bodies as he guides them through a choreographed performance, documenting their progress in photography. The resulting images create an intimate emotional portrait of his models, capturing their hopes, dreams, fears and fragility in a way that is both hopeful and haunting, sinister and sublime.

The Scope Miami solo project brings together works from two new performances, “Carrera” and “The Gravitation”, both of which focus on young Korean women learning to negotiate the pressures of living in the USA. These will be presented alongside never-before-seen works from previous projects executed in both Korea and the USA in the past four years. Together they will provide a unique cross-section of Koh Sang Woo’s artistic practice.

Koh Sang Woo is a Korean-American artist based in New York Recent public exhibitions include Sungkok Museum and the HOMA Museum (Seoul), the Lancaster Museum of Art (Pennsylvania), the Queens Museum (New York) and the 798 Beijing Biennial, alongside solo exhibitions at galleries in London, Hong Kong, Seoul and New York.
