Liane Lang: Elected to the Royal Academy
Liane Lang has been elected to the Royal Academy in Printmaking in 2025.
“Liane Lang is a mixed media artist with a focus on the conversation between printmaking and sculpture. She prints onto objects, often enigmatic found pieces of industrial machinery, to explore the tension between the narrative and historical and the texture, scale and presence of the object. Liane places the body in nature as well as post-industrial and historic spaces and explores the unclear divide between the natural and human made. She explores legacy and fragmented narratives through monuments and statuary and uses a wide range of materials beyond traditional surfaces, from bark, lead and tarmac to marble and bronze. Historical and material research plays a major part in her practice, directing the choice of location, technique and materials.
Liane Lang studied at NCAD in Dublin, took a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London, and a Postgraduate at the Royal Academy Schools, London graduating in 2006. She lives and works in the East End of London. She has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally, including two museum solo exhibitions in 2024 at the Butler Gallery, Ireland and Whitaker Museum, UK. In 2025 she was part of Earthbound at Derby Museum of Making. In 2024 she created a major public sculpture for the National Stone Centre, Derbyshire with a grant from the George Frampton Fund. In 2022 she collaborated on a project at the Museo Guggenheim in Bilbao. In 2021 she won a residency award by the Ampersand Foundation. She has previously exhibited at Kunsthalle Tübingen, James Simon Gallery, Berlin, Historisches Museum, Berlin, Musée de Beaux Arts Calais, PS1 New York, Kunstwerke, Berlin and Kunstverein Heidelberg.”
