Slipping the Veil: St Bartholomew the Great, London

Opening Reception: Tuesday 27 May, 6:30 – 10pm
Great St Barts Church, West Smithfield, London EC1A 9DS

Slipping the Veil is an exhibition of twelve contemporary artists in London’s oldest church, curated by Elena Unger, Artist in Residence at the Church, and James Freeman.

For over 900 years, Saint Bartholomew the Great has been a place of ritual whose central purpose is bringing visitors into contact with the ineffable. It is said that within St Barts, the boundaries of time and space become that little bit thinner. Slipping the Veil presents an exhibition of artworks that perform the same function: to lift our experience beyond the earthly every day, to slip the veil of banality, and to make contact with experiences that reach beyond ourselves.

The show includes reconfigured relics by Jack Evans, immersive sound and words from Nick Cave, along with visual installations from an international group of artists, including paintings byMaxim Burnett, Ben Jamie, Anne von Freyburg, and Elena Unger; sculptures by Carolein Smit and Claire Curneen; and installations by Diana Orving, Juliette Losq, Edgar Ward and Kate McDonnell.

The exhibition runs at Great St Barts Church from 28 May – 14 June, open every day 10am – 5pm (closed Sunday 10am – 12:30pm). Entry is free.
