Volker Hermes: Solo show at Suermondt Ludwig Museum, Aachen

James Freeman Gallery is pleased to announce that the Suermondt Ludwig Museum in Aachen, Germany is presenting a solo exhibition for Volker Hermes, with works inspired by portraits in their collection.

In keeping with Volker’s distinctive approach to portraiture, the collages obscure the sitter’s faces with extensions of the costumes worn in the original portraits. His ‘Hidden Portraits’ are playful and mischievous; they delight in the sensory exuberance of historical dress. But they also help us to understand how historical portraiture operated in its original context.

His distinctive approach has seen collaborations with the Metropolitan Museum and Christies in New York, and Leighton House in the UK amongst many others.
